THE STRANDING This sea turtle was captured in a pound net, in Core Sound, east of Cedar Island, NC.  The left eye was swollen nearly shut, with a superficial cut on the lower interior edge of the upper eye lid.
The right eye dilates normally.
Fortaz will be administered for three weeks.
Elevated white blood cell on admission: 34x103
   
THE TREATMENT
11/10/99

Dr. Craig Harms of the NC State University College of Veterinary Medicine, visits the center with some students to exam Cedar's eye problem.  The eye was examined and flushed and is showing some signs of improvement.
After the first week on Fortaz the white blood count dropped to 9x103, which is thought to be in the normal range.
UPDATE 12/22/99 It has been determined that Cedar is blind in the left eye.
The PCV is 32% and Glucose 88 mg/dl

Cedar takes a final lap and gets a lift.
