 RELEASED JUNE 4, 2003
Weight 45.0 kg  54.2 kg
SCL: 73.8 cm  75.5 cm
SCW:  55.3 cm  57.0 cm
THE STRANDING This turtle was admitted with intact bones and necrotic muscle and skin sloughing from the gangrenous left front flipper.  The flipper had been entangled in fishing gear which compromised the blood supply.
The beak is moderately eroded and numerous barnacles were found in the buccal cavity including the surface of the tongue.
The turtle was started on antibiotics: Ceftazidime (20mg/kg Q 72H) and Clindamycin (5 mg/kg IM Q 24H)
THE TREATMENT On July 29th the turtle was taken to the NC State University Collage of Veterinary Medicine. Under anesthesia the veterinarian performed surgical amputation of the  flipper at the level of the proximal humerus. Intracoelomic fluids (250 msl LRS & 250 mls saline) were administered during surgery.  Oral barnacles were removed.
UPDATE This is fishing gear swallowed by the turtle and passed after a week in the Center.  The net has a strong odor,  possibly creosote.
UPDATE Dec 7, 02  Abbott is currently in our largest tank giving the turtle an opportunity to swim and dive with only three flippers.
Antibiotic cream is applied daily.
JUNE 4, 2003 Abbot spent the winter swimming, diving and eating fish and squid.  She has overcome her difficulties and is ready to try it on her own.
