| THE
STRANDING |
This turtle was admitted with intact bones and necrotic
muscle and skin sloughing from the gangrenous left front flipper.
The flipper had been entangled in fishing gear which compromised the blood
supply.
The beak is moderately eroded and numerous barnacles were found in
the buccal cavity including the surface of the tongue.

The turtle was started on antibiotics: Ceftazidime (20mg/kg Q 72H) and
Clindamycin (5 mg/kg IM Q 24H) |
| THE
TREATMENT |
On July 29th the turtle was taken to the NC State
University Collage of Veterinary Medicine. Under anesthesia the veterinarian
performed surgical amputation of the flipper at the level of the
proximal humerus. Intracoelomic fluids (250 msl LRS & 250 mls saline)
were administered during surgery. Oral barnacles were removed.
