Stranding |
Found December 2, 2001 on the beach of Assateague
Island on Maryland's southern shore. Water temperature was in the
mid-50's F. The carapace was covered in green grass and algae.
The right front flipper appears to have been amputated with nearly
surgical precision by person or persons unknown.
The sea turtle was cared for by the National Aquarium in Baltimore
until other arrangement could be made.
David Schofield, the Marine Animal Recue Program coordinator for the
Aquarium, made arrangements for this little green to be flown to us, courtesy
of a volunteer with a pilots license and plane. |
UPDATE
12/27/2001 |
Despite the missing flipper this little guy is able
to swim, dive, and remain on the bottom of the tank. The amputated
flipper is a concern, as so much is missing. It is right on the line
between rehabilitation and unrelease-able. Time and observation will
tell. |
