STRANDING
This sea turtle, stranded near Bear Island in Hammock Beach State Park, NC on June 3, 2000.
The turtle has severed carapace fractures, some days or weeks old.
Whole pieces of the carapace are missing and several sections of bone are necrotic.

THE TREATMENT The initial PCV was 5% and the Glucose was 89 mg/dl.
Lactated ringers with dextrose was administered, as was Fortaz.
The wound is irrigated and packed with silvadene every 2 days.
UPDATE June 14 2000 She is eating and the PCV creeps up to 7%.
A water pik us used to flush and clean the wound under the loose and
necrotic bone.

UPDATE OCT 2001 Bear spent the summer outside, greeting visitors and enjoying the sunshine.
Now that the air and water temps are getting colder, all patients are now inside for the winter.

A visit from the Vet School.  Students have an opportunity to exam sea turtles and
the turtles have an opportunity to give blood. 
Initial blood work: PCV 39%.

Weight 43.2 kg
Bear was transported to the NC State U, College of Veterinary Medicine, on March 26th, for a surgical repair of the damaged carapace. It was decided to remove any edges that could potentially catch on fishing lines or other objects.
