THE STRANDING Kayakers to the rescue.

rescue photos courtesy Chris White
David and Jan Terry, Jason Terry, and Chris and Amanda White kayaking on their way to Bear Island when they noticed what appeared to be a dead animal in the shallow water.  As they approached they saw it was a live Loggerhead sea turtle, obviously debilitated.  They reported the sighting but there was no one to help with in water rescue.
The turtle was far too large to load onto a kayak, so David paddled home to find a friend with a boat.   He realized a jet ski would also be required because the turtle was in shallow water and the boat would have to be towed in and out the location.   By time he returned to the island the tide had changed.  The other folks stood between the turtle and the deeper water to prevent her from floating away.  Then everyone helped to load her into the boat
(she weighs over 200 pounds) and the kayakers quickly paddled back to the launch site to take her from the boat and load her into a truck.

"Of course we never made it to Bear Island", commented Chris, "however Bogue II made this trip a memory none of us will ever forget."
