THE STRANDING This very small, very young Kemp's Ridley is off to a difficult start in life.  She was caught on a hook in Southport where it was discovered in addition to swallowing the hook she has a carapace fracture.
THE TREATMENT Radiographs show the hook is deep in the esophagus and must be removed surgically.
Surgery was performed at the NC State University College of Veterinary Medicine.  The hook was removed under anesthesia.  The fracture was stabilized with surgical wire.
