| THE STRANDING | This sea turtle was found in a pound
net with extensive damage carapace. Massive crushing wound across first vertebral and both first lateral scutes right & left. |
| THE TREATMENT | A full examination revealed a fracture
to the nuchal, with the scapula protruding from the wound. Taken
to the School of Veterinary Medicine at NC State on July 30. A catheter
was placed in the left external jugular vein and 750 mls LRS was administered.
Dead tissue was removed and the area lavaged. Stainless steel bone plates
and screws were used to reduce the fracture.
The turtle will continue to receive pain medication and antibiotics.  |

| JAN 2004 | Caretta finally has plates and bandages removed and
is enjoying deep water.
