| THE
STRANDING |
Caught on a hook and line in
Carolina Beach. The fisherman cut the line, leaving plenty of
line available to aid in locating and extracting the hook. The
Carolina Beach Sea Turtle Patrol responded to the call, and
transported the little sea turtle to the KBSTRRC.

| THE
TREATMENT |
The hook was too deep to be
extracted here. Arrangements were made to transport the turtle to
the NC State School of Veterinary Medicine, for surgery.

| JULY 26, 2006 |
At the vet school, the turtle was placed
under anesthesia, and the hook was removed. She was then returned
to the KBSTRRC.

Going up and over the beach
access we drove slowly along the shore, looking for a place with the
calmest
surf. Both of these guys are little squirts and we didn’t want them
battered
and tumbling back to shore by a large wave.
Finding the perfect spot we hopped out with our
patients and held a small ceremony,
invoking Mother Ocean to accept and protect these two critters.
“Carolina”
went in exactly the way we saw
her most of the time at the hospital: defensive, flippers up protecting
her
face. After a moment she realized she was FREE, so it was flippers back
and she
shot through the waves.
