Caretta caretta Adult |
|
| THE STRANDING | Found
floating off shore near Cape Lookout, NC, near channel marker # 1.
First brought to Harkers Island and then transported to the KBSTRRC. |
THE
TREATMENT
![]() |
With another
adult loggerhead on the way, several changes to the interior arrangements
of tanks had to be made.
Pepper's tank was brought in for Cape, and Cape's tank was made available for Channel, among other switches; and plumbing changes, lots of plumbing changes. |
| TREATMENT | Once carried inside
she was placed in a tank and evaluated.
She was covered in carpet of algae and moss. Curiously, this covering of algae and moss is similar in color and coat to that of Cape's, upon her arrival. They both stranded in the same location, and are the same species, size and gender. ![]() ![]() ![]()
Fortaz was administered and the tank was filled enough to give buoyancy but shallow enough so that lifting her head to breathe was not too difficult. She was offered food, which she was interested in but unable to eat. |

| Died
November 29,2001 |
Channel was unable to
overcome her difficulties and died November 29th.
A necropsy revealed a firm and dark liver, not functioning properly, as well as intestinal problems. These serious abnormalities could not have been treated medically or surgically. |
