THE STRANDING Dorey was admitted with floatation problems and will remain in rehab for the winter.
THE TREATMENT Dorey is a juvenile loggerhead turtle incidentally captured in a pound net in Core Sound, North Carolina, in early June 2004. Dorey was taken to the NOAA-NMFS Beaufort Lab as part of an on-going monitoring study of juvenile turtles that occur in inshore waters of North Carolina. Dorey along with dozens of other turtles had his weight and lengths measured, had a small amount of blood taken, had some tissue and scute scrapings collected for further analyses, and had her sex verified by laparascopy. Following this, Dorey and the other turtles were kept overnight to verify that the sampling did not impede them in any way. It turned out that a small amount of air had been trapped inside Dorey's body cavity, and so she could not dive properly. She was transferred to the KBSTRRC for more extended observation.  She received lots of TLC within several weeks the air was expelled slowly and she was able to dive normally again.
