HYDE

LOGGERHEAD

Caretta caretta

Juvenile

ADMIT
OCT 1, 2009
RELEASED

Weight  35.8 kg
SCL:  61.6 cm
SCW:  52.2 cm

THE STRANDING Hyde swallowed a large long line circle hook which lodged in her esophagus, with the leader protruding from her mouth.  The hook likely originated from a shark longline fishery.
THE TREATMENT Removal of the hook required surgery and was removed under sedation by Dr. Craig Harms, who provided these photos.

Hyde lost a shocking amount of blood and was closely monitored for the first several hours after admission.  She was placed in shallow water.
Due to the injuries she was not offered food .

After several days she was offered squid ( no heads, no tails) and she readily accepted the food.  Eating did not re-open the wound .

Hyde continues to eat and has been placed in deeper water.
