Caught on large fishing hook, near Jay
Bird Shoals, off of Bald Head Island, NC. The fisherman reported
the incidental catch and noted the sea turtle had been hooked for about
an hour. Gilbert Powell, director of the Bald Head Island Conservancy
facilitated the rescue with the use of his boat. The wire leader
was cut and the turtle transported by boat/car to the KBSTRRC.
Thanks to the Bald Head Island group for their continued rapid response
to sea turtles in trouble. |

TREATMENT |
An attempt was made to the remove the hook in house.
Dr. Craig Harms anethestitized the sea turtle using Ketamine (5 mg/kg)
and Medetomadine (50 mcg/kg). This was reversed after the procedure
with Atipamezole (250 mcg/kg, 1/2 IM and 1/2 IV)

The hook was not removable using various extractors. The sea turtle will
travel to the College of Veterinary Medicine on July 12 for surgical removal
of the hook.

JULY 12 |
The hook was successfully removed. An incision
was made at the throat and the hook was cut and removed. The tear
to the esophagus was repaired and the incision sutured. She will
not be fed for one week.
The hook is said to be dissolvable in salt water. |
