Caretta caretta Juvenile |
|
| THE STRANDING | Observed floating near Myrtle Beach, SC by a NOAA observer who lives on Topsail Island and notified NC wildlife officials. |
| THE TREATMENT | The turtle was in an extremely lethargic state, probably a net capture, then unable to dive was grazed by a boat propeller. The symptoms are consistent with near drowning. |
| Started on Fortaz. She was placed in shallow fresh
water for 3 weeks. Difficult to eat when not in water. The
blood work is normal.
When placed in deeper water for buoyancy she began eating. |
|
| AUG 9, 2003 | Stopped moving, no eye response. A trachea tube was inserted and the turtle was bagged for forced breathing. More than one gallon of water was expelled through the trachea tube. Staff waited for a gurgling sound, then remove the bag, then tip the water out, then bag again for breath. This continued for one hour. She was watched all night. Clindamycin was administered along with the Fortaz. Fluids were administered. |
Tube feeding has begun. The turtle is placed
on a slant board and a tube is placed in the mouth. An attempt was
made to insert an esophageal tube for less stressful feeding but this was
not successful.
On the slant board after feeding, sunken eyes tell the story. |
|
| SEPT 14, 2003 | Despite best efforts this turtle was not able to overcome the initial trauma and she died. A necropsy will be performed. |
