| THE ILLNESS | Ocean was found floating near Ocean Isle Beach, NC. She was very lethargic and her shell was in a state of degradation of an unknown cause. |

Ocean 12/98 Looking good!
| TREATMENT | Ocean was delivered to us less than 48 hours prior
to our evacuation from the island
due to Hurricane Bonnie (8/98). Her shell was washed with betadine
and flushed. She was then fitted for her evacuation tank.
After our return to the island Ocean moved into one of our new bright blue tanks. |
| THE PROGNOSIS | She is eating on her own but with some difficulty. She is unable to fully submerge at this point. |
| UPDATE 9/27/98 | Dr. Greg Lewbart, along with some senior veterinary students, of the NC State University, College of Veterinary Medicine, observed and photographed the fungal infection. Three shell/bone biopsies were taken. Stayed tuned for the results. |
| UPDATE 12/15/98 | The biopsies were inconclusive. However the carapace continues to heal as we continue the betadine solution scrub. Ocean is now able to fully submerge and has a very healthy appetite. |
| UPDATE 9/14/99 |
Ocean rides out storm off island. |
| UPDATE 10/20/99 | The medical team from the College of Veterinary medicine
once again pays a house call. Ocean is checked top to bottom.

| UPDATE 11/10/99 | Ocean
was driven to the College of Veterinary Medicine, on November 2,
to remove the necrotic bone. She was returned the same day, and is
now recovering nicely, as the photo shows, one week later. The area is
packed in antibiotic cream and then covered with Tegederm. This dressing
is changed everyday for the first week.
