| THE
STRANDING |
Sounder was found by a pound net fisherman as he
was emptying his net. To the fisherman who has seen many turtles and has
rescued many sick ones, this turtle looked very sick and in trouble.
Her shell seems to be rotting away lots of bone is exposed. Thanks
to him for turning Sounder over to the authorities who brought her to us. |
| THE
TREATMENT |
This loggerhead has a fungal infection affecting
the carapace. The turtle has been started on vitamin therapy and
the carapace is cleaned and washed with an antibiotic solution each day.

| UPDATE
OCT 2002 |
Sounder is now inside for the winter. The carapace
receives a scrub with soapy water each day after breakfast.
Each winter it seems we have one turtle continually migrating in place,
searching for the way out. Sounder is that turtle this winter.
Always swimming. |
| JUNE
4, 2003 |
Finally the day has arrived. If we could measure
muscle tone, this turtle would be going out the winner. He has been
swimming in place all winter in preparation for this day. Weight
gain almost 30 pounds. |
