| THE STRANDING | Turtle in distress call phoned
in by alert homeowners living on the intracoastal waterway in
Hampstead, NC. The turtle appeared to have taken up residence
under their boat. Veteran turtle rescuer Nancy Fahey was joined
in the water by the property owner and together they captured the mud
and barnacle covered sea turtle. She was then passed onto a boat
and then a dock before her overland trip to the KBSTRRC. |
| THE TREATMENT | The turtle is in poor physical
condition. Monofilament line was wrapped around her left front
flipper with line, sinker and hook trailing behind and entangling in
the rear flipper. She was bleeding from the marginal scutes and
has a spongy feeling plastron. She was briefly cleaned of mud. Fluid and antibiotics were administered. She will spend the night in shallow water to ease the process of breathing. |
| The turtle did not survive the night.
She passed in comfort, her struggle over. |
