THE STRANDING For this small Kemp’s Ridley, “Waterway” it was a quick rescue and a short ride. On Labor Day weekend Karen Sota, one of our staff members, got a call from neighbors, they had just pulled a small turtle out of the water that seemed lethargic, but not injured.

The family, dad Tony and his son Devin Hewett had dropped a net in the waterway in search of some shrimp for dinner. As they began to pull it in Devin spotted what he thought was a stingray, because the only part of the turtle that was visible was the plastron. But as they pulled it closer he realized that a small sea turtle had been caught along with the shrimp (the turtle was probably enjoying his own shrimp dinner before being snagged!) Once in the boat Devin noticed that the turtle seemed to be in distress and confused as a result of the experience. They returned to their dock with the turtle, and since Karen lives right down the street she got the 911 call. Devin wanted to make sure this turtle got the proper care, and was especially concerned about the large volume of boat and jet ski traffic on the waterway that weekend. This little guy was pitifully thin and definitely struggling in his search for food.

TREATMENT Waterway was put on our standard protocol of antibiotics, and when offered some squid upon arrival he ate it in seconds. His appetite has  grown over the past few weeks and he’s well on his way to recovery.
